Reagan having daily reading time with me (one of my fav parts of the day)-

  IMG_1322

I have used a pretty well-rounded approach to teaching her to read, I think.  Here’s one of the tools that I have used to teach her phonics- Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann.  It is one of the less colorful and fun tools that I have used with her, but it has helped her a lot.  She is over half way through the book and gets excited every time she successfully reads a harder/longer story.

Here’s a video of her reading the story portion of her lesson (a new story)-

I have a good friend who is teaching Kindergarten in our public school system.  She has been an encouragement and good resource during my homeschooling moments of weakness!   She does a “Daily Fix It” with her kids every morning to help them with simple writing rules (first letter of sentence capitalization, ending punctuation, etc.)  I started doing this with Reagan to give her an opportunity to work on these skills.  Keeping the skills learning time separate from her personal writing time has lessened her frustration with writing and allowed her to do her own thing.  I write a sentence with mistakes and a picture.  The picture is probably unnecessary, but she enjoys seeing what I have come up with!  She has to re-write the sentences and fix the mistakes.  Sometimes, she will color my picture or add to it (like the sad face heart in this one! haha).  I have kept the sentences pretty easy and basic so she can easily read them.

Rea’s art from Miss Margaret’s class – “GYOTAKU”

Some things I like about this class is that Reagan learns all sorts of art methods, is exposed to a variety of materials, and learns art history!  Miss Margaret crams a lot of material into a short period of time every Thursday.

Here’s the scoop from Miss Margaret on this piece-

“Gyotaku (gyo = fish, taku = rubbing) was invented in the early 1800s in Japan by fishermen who wanted to record their catch. This was their livelihood (not sport fishing as we have today) and the print allowed them to document the size and types of fish caught and still take them back to be sold or eaten. Also, because certain fish in Japan are revered, the fisherman could release these fish back into the water after taking their rubbings. Japanese fishermen took newsprint, ink and brush out to sea with them. It has also developed into an art form; many now create prints for their beauty and artistic elements.

Our artists used their choices of printmaking ink colors to paint life size fish cast from real fish. Students chose one of an assortment of species, Blue Gill, Star Fish, Flounder, Piranha, Angel Fish, Trout, Perch, Bass, or small Walleye Pike. They then placed their paper over the fish and rubbed for a monoprint.”

Emmy and I had some zoo time while Rea was in class.  I like getting opportunities for one-on-one with her.  I feel like she needs more of that being our middle child!  Here she is putting on some lipstick before we go in at the zoo.

April Showers of blessings!

When I reflect on these weeks and time with my babies, I am more and more amazed at God’s blessings on me.  In the moments, it often feels like chaos, but really, my life with them is so full of joy and moments that you just can’t put a price on.  I am trying to learn to enjoy these blessings more in the moment.  After seeing a reference made by a friend on Instagram, I was intrigued to find out more about the book One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.  To my surprise, I saw the book at my mom’s house last night.  It had been gifted to her, but she hasn’t had time to read it yet.  I brought it home and started it in the tub during my daily 10 minutes of ME time.  After chapter one, I am thinking that this book will really be good for me!  I do not take time for reading for myself these days, but it just feels like this will be worth it.

“Spring Break” – Week of Easter

Our Spring Break was sort of dictated by Thursday Connection’s schedule.  We didn’t really take a big official break or trip, but we did tie in some special Easter activities into our routine.  I was able to take some days off from work to have extra special time with them.

A good old coloring sheet- something you don’t see too much, anymore.  I colored one, too.  It was fun!

IMG_0581

We painted suns (continued solar system study).

Some Easter dvds we watched-

IMG_0631

We made Ressurection Rolls.  For those who are not familiar- you are able to teach the Easter story to kids through the recipe.  They really enjoyed the activity.

The marshmallow represented Jesus. After Jesus died on the cross, his friends prepared him to be buried by anointing him with oil (dipping the marshmallow in butter) and spices (rolling it in cinnamon and sugar). Then Jesus was placed in his grave clothes (the crescent roll) and wrapped up tight.

At this point, you put the rolls on the baking sheet and place them in the tomb (oven) and seal the tomb with a big rock (the oven door).

In the oven the marshmallow melts and blends with the cinnamon sugar, making it appear like the marshmallow has disappeared. When you remove the rolls and allow them to cool, you can let your kids open them up to reveal that Jesus is gone! He is risen! Jesus is alive!

Also, cousin Roston had his first piano recital at Easter Sunday dinner.  We’re proud of his dedication to learn and love his fab teacher, too.

The Solar System study continued—-  I was surprised when I found out by reading one of Reagan’s library books to her that there are only 8 planets now!  Pluto is not counted at #9, anymore.  It is only considered a dwarf planet!  Haha!  Who knew?  Now I can have the pleasure of finally saying, “When I was your age…….” (there were 9 planets!)

Us girls decided one night that we were going to sleep in swimsuits instead of pjs!  Max literally joined us.

IMG_0525

Some of Rea’s writings from the month-

“I like dogs.  They are cool.  I like dogs.”

“Tucker and Dixie- they had puppies.  I love you.  I love you, too.  Dixie and Tucker.”

IMG_0530

“A day at the beach.  I saw a duck.”

IMG_0532

She worked on this one for a few days.

“One day a unicorn went to the zoo.  “Wow, the zoo is cool.”  They had animals.  She said, “I  don’t know which animal to pet first.  First, I will pet the seal.  Now, I will pet the horse.  Now, I will pet the zebra.  Now, I will pet the cat.”

IMG_0536

“I love you.  You love me.  We are happy as can be.”   (real original, right!? haha)

IMG_0538

We talked about and made craters with flour and a marble.

IMG_0554

She created a display on the planets.  We checked out a book on each planet from the LaFollette Public Library.  She drew a picture and shared some interesting facts.

IMG_0556

IMG_0563

They planted sunflower seeds at Gran’s house.

IMG_0573

We found a fun song/video on Youtube about the planets.  It totally helped her learn the order they are from the sun almost immediately!  Max and Emmy even learned.

IMG_0575

We weren’t able to make it to the Light the Night for Kate event, but we still supported from home.  I shared Kate’s story with the girls.  I tried to explain to them what cancer was.  It was incredibly hard for me to tell them.  Maybe I shouldn’t have.  I don’t know.  It is hard to tell them the horrible truths about things that happen in our world (cancer, sickness,  drugs, crime, etc.).  They are just so pure and innocent.  Their world isn’t one that has all that “stuff”.  They were both literally moved to tears by Kate’s story.  Even days and days after that night, every green bow in town was noticed by their little eyes.

IMG_0577

And finally, Rea’s art from TC- “Metallic Fish”
